Winter Has Arrived! Let's Open the Ladbrokes Winter Racing Carnival
Celebrations are set to unfold at Cluden Park as the Townsville Turf Club celebrates 150-years since its inception in 1874.
Central to festivities is the 2024 $1 Million Ladbrokes Winter Racing Carnival, starting 8 June with the Lawrence & Hanson 2YO Classic.
Wayne Croton, CEO of Cluden Park, expresses his anticipation for the carnival, mentioning various trackside activities alongside the exciting races.
“Opening with this weekend’s Lawrence & Hanson 2YO Classic, we have something for everyone,” said Mr. Croton.
“For some it’s the racing, for others it’s the fashion, we’re hosting an afterparty for the party-lovers and we’ll also be turning on the Cowboys vs Warriors game.”
“Children are welcome in General Admission, it’s a great atmosphere much like an outdoor lawn party.”
For Brooke Davies, Cluden Park Fashions on the Field Coordinator, the Millinery and Hatter Mini Market is a must see.
“The Millinery and Hatter Mini Market will open at noon, and will feature milliners, hatters, and equestrian stalls, and a band from King Konz School of Music to play for us as well,” said Ms. Davies.
“Our Fashions on the Field theme is A Touch of Gold, and it ties in well with the 150th celebrations.”
“This theme will continue through to the Ladbrokes Townsville Cup.”
Geoff Weeks, Chairman of the club, invites racegoers to commemorate 150-years of tradition and triumph.
“Our long-standing tradition, the Townsville Cup, has been a highlight since 1884,” Mr. Weeks stated.
“While the carnival celebrates our current achievements, we also reflect on significant triumphs throughout our 150-year journey.”
“We’ve witnessed remarkable moments, including William ‘Skinny’ Thomas’ then-record breaking seven wins on a seven-race card in 1929, and Picnic In The Park’s 20th consecutive win in 1985, also a record breaking achievement at the time.”
“We’ve also experienced rare events like a triple-dead-heat for first place in 1985 and local hero Party King’s three consecutive Townsville Cup victories between 2000-02.”
“Our 150-Year celebrations will culminate in a Gala Ball this October.”
Following the Lawrence & Hanson 2YO Classic, attention shifts to Explore Property Munro & Co Ladies Day (20 July), Ladbrokes Guineas Race Day (28 July), and Ladbrokes Townsville Cup (3 August).
Supporting events such as Breakfast With The Stars, Barrier Draw, and Calcutta Auction are eagerly awaited by the racing community.
As Cluden Park celebrates its rich history while embracing the future, the 150th anniversary celebrations promise a mix of racing excitement, cherished traditions, and memorable moments.
