Northern Stint Gives Lachlan a Career Boost
Visiting Victorian apprentice Lachlan Overall is well on the way to rebooting his career after a winning double at Cluden Park on Tuesday.
The 23-year-old, who has ridden winners from Morphettville to Sandown, has ventured to Townsville to get his career back on track after a form slump at his home base with Cranbourne trainer Mick Kent.
Overall is half way through a three month stint with Cluden trainer Sarah Acornley and hit form with two inch-perfect rides to claim a winning double on Tuesday.
He produced an ice cool ride to land a nose win on raging favourite Roweiner’s Dance for trainer Bill Kenning and led throughout to win the last on Breakwater Boy for Lindsay Hatch.
Tuesday’s double followed a winner at Bowen on Saturday for the young rider, who has now ridden 47 winners in two years of riding despite limitations through weight.
“I spoke to Mick Kent my boss, and he’s such a good boss, and he said you need a bit of a change up,” Overall said.
“Maybe somewhere hot to get my weight down and get riding again properly and then go from there.
‘”That was the plan. Kiran Quilty came up here and really enjoyed it and she’s also apprenticed to Mick and she suggested why not go up there and get going again.
“I was slowing down a bit in Victoria. Probably didn’t continue the form I enjoyed early.
“I feel like this is sparking me up a bit just to get on horses that are competitive.
“Sarah and Carl (Spry) they’ve been really good with advice and showing me the ropes.
“I rode at 58kg today but I can normally ride around 56kg. If I Can ride at around that mark comfortably I’ll be stoked.
“It’s obviously different to what I’m used to. It was so hot when I first got here but thankfully it’s cooling down.
“There’s a lot of good people up here and it seems like a tight community where everyone looks after each other a bit.
“And I’m very grateful for the opportunities I’m getting.”
Overall kept his nerve to keep Roweiner’s Dance going under hands heels to win by a nose in the Hygain 3yo QTIS Open Hcp (1000m).
He backed it up with a well-judged front running ride on Breakwater Boy in the Ladbrokes BM60 Hcp (1400m) and said some helpful track advice came into play.
“The gate helped too and it made it easy to lead and he got into a nice rhythm. I just tried to give him an easy time up the hill and then let him roll a bit down the hill coming down to the turn,” Overall said.
“That’s just one thing I’ve picked up that a few people have told me.”
